Surface roughness measurement

Surface roughness measurement

Precision down to the smallest Ra value.

What is surface roughness and why is it important?

Surface roughness is a measure of the microscopic irregularities on the surface of a steel component. In the process industry, where hygiene requirements are often high, it’s critical to know this. Rough surfaces create small depressions where bacteria and product residues can accumulate, making e.g. effective CIP cleaning difficult.

In food production, requirements typically range up to Ra 0.8 µm, while requirements in the pharmaceutical industry (according to the ASME-BPE standard) are often stricter, at Ra 0.4 µm. The right surface roughness is therefore the foundation for safe, sterile, and legal production that minimizes the risk of bacterial growth and contamination.

Precise in-house measurement with advanced equipment

Precise in-house measurement with advanced equipment

To ensure high precision, we always perform our measurements in-house using advanced measuring equipment. Our specialist analyzes the specific steel components and measures both Ra values (average roughness) and Rmax values (maximum profile height).

By measuring both parameters, we ensure that no individual peaks or valleys in the surface exceed the permitted tolerances. The measurement results in an easy-to-read graph that gives you a transparent picture of the precise condition of the surface. This specialized approach ensures that we don't just guess but know exactly how the component will perform in your critical environment.

The measurement report: Your documented security

The measurement report: Your documented security

When you purchase technical components from us, documentation is often part of the deal. If your order requires roughness measurement, we’ll prepare a detailed measurement report, which is included in the accompanying documentation package. With the report in hand, you have the proof ready for both the authorities and your next audit, so you can show that the components are in order. This gives you complete certainty and peace of mind that your compliance requirements are met to the letter.

With the documentation in place, you’re better protected against costly production stoppages and are in a strong position during inspections or audits by relevant authorities and other regulatory bodies.

Our systematic quality assurance

Our systematic quality assurance

Our quality assurance is never based on gut feelings, but on fixed procedures.

With over 40 years of industry knowledge, we work according to a methodical approach, where we always measure a representative sample of the components we receive from our suppliers. This internal control ensures that the specifications always match reality, so you can always rely on the documentation that accompanies your order. By verifying the parts in-house ourselves, we eliminate uncertainty and only send quality components on to your production. It’s this systematic approach that creates security and economic benefits for all our customers.

Get rid of your doubts and contact us today

Are you unsure about the precise requirements for surface roughness in your specific production, or do you have questions about the role of the measurement report in your overall documentation package? We’re ready to help clarify any uncertainty about both requirements and practical application. By involving us early in the process, we can work together to ensure that your solution meets all applicable hygiene requirements and standards, helping you avoid critical errors. This gives you the certainty that your components are fully documented and transparent for future audits.
