Material selection and solutions for butterfly valve gaskets

Butterfly valve gaskets play an essential role as sealing components in modern process plants. When correctly selected and installed, the seal ensures that butterfly valves close tightly – keeping product and cleaning media separate. This reduces the risk of leaks, spills and cross-contamination.  

Choosing a gasket that matches the valve specifications and process conditions directly contributes to food safety, operational stability and consistent quality. We supply gaskets that comply with OEM specifications and fit precisely with the valve series in your plant. The choice of material has a significant impact on the performance and service life of the seal. In hygienic environments involving CIP cleaning and alkaline or acidic media, EPDM is typically the first choice. It can withstand temperatures of up to approx. 150 °C and is approved for food contact. 

HNBR is suitable for processes involving grease, oil and water – but should not be used with CIP, as it cannot withstand strong cleaning chemicals. For high temperatures and aggressive media, we recommend FPM/viton, which can withstand up to 200 °C and has high chemical resistance. However, it should not be used with steam or lye. 

When the seal is adapted to the temperature, medium and cleaning method from the outset, you get a reliable, documentable and durable solution.

We also recommend that you inspect the valve seat, bushings and axle during servicing. Wear or scratches can affect even a new gasket and lead to repeated leaks. When both the gasket and mechanical components are in good condition, you achieve a stable and long-lasting seal.

It depends on the medium, temperature and cleaning method. EPDM is chosen for acids, CIP and bases. HNBR is best for oil and grease without CIP, while FPM/viton is suitable for high temperatures and chemicals – but not for steam or lye.
